Black and White - Bright New Year 2022 - This Is The Year To Get Great Coffee - 9/10

Black and White Roasters is a very sheik roaster that is popping up on the scenes. They have some very interesting methods for processing their coffee and that lends their beans to some great and unique flavors. They are based in Wake Forest, North Carolina and their goal, much like mine, is to “make specialty coffee more approachable to the masses”. They have several different roasts, single origins, and processing methods. Like the up and coming honey wash and anaerobic processing methods. For my first review of Black and White coffee roasters I chose to review their Bright New Year 2022, just in time for the Lunar New Year.

I will start by saying that this coffee is an absolute pleasure to drink. It has a floral nose with some sweet honey in there as well. Like all my reviews I try to test the coffee through several different brewing methods to see which one makes the coffee shine. Just like most medium roasts, I find that the French press method is a little daunting and is not the best method to brew this through. The other 2 methods are much more friendly to the Bright New Year Roast. I find that a pour over or through my Spinn coffee machine really express the bright flavors that I am looking for in these beans. I am normally against the pour over method when I am rushing to get ready in the morning so I found myself brewing this through the Spinn machine on a regular basis so I will start there. I will admit that these beans when brewed with a less than robust ratio tend to be a little muted and watery so I for the first time found myself increasing the bean to water ratio from what I would normally use (1:16). I had just kicked it up a little bit to a 1:15 ratio in search of all the flavors I was looking for. I was trying to tread carefully so as to not lose some of the lighter floral and peach notes.

When it comes to the pour over method, like always I use the Gina by Goat story so that I can control the water flow and monitor the weight ratio all in one convenient vessel. When brewed through a pour over method is when the Bright New Year really has the chance to shine. The extra air through the pour over creates fireworks in your mouth, you are able to find all the flavors listed on the bag, it starts out with a lovely floral aroma and then transitions into a fruity symphony of macerated stone fruits and berries. Finally, you are graced with the flavors of gentle honey. Now, when I taste my coffee I will normally do it in a similar fashion to that of wine, towards the end of your sip you want to keep some coffee in your mouth and do a light inhale. This way the remnants coat every part of your tongue and you can start to parse the flavors in the coffee. At this time is really when the sweet honey starts to kick in. Although I would really recommend this brewing method, you can also brew this through a traditional drip machine, and with the right ratios, you will be perfectly satisfied.

In summation, the Bright New Year 2022 by Black and White Roasters really gives me hope for this year. I am optimistic that we have a wonderful year of great coffee ahead. In light of world events for the past couple years, the world just needed a little bit of bright flavors that this coffee delivers in spades. I highly advise that you brew this through a pour over or a traditional drip machine for your morning coffee. It is a great way to start the day, and the year. I am looking forward to trying out more offerings from Black and White. On their website they have a list of full-fledged offerings, with so many choices, I am confident that you can find one that delights your palate.
