I have had the pleasure of using the Spinn Coffee Maker for about 3 weeks now as my primary brew system. I must say that I have been pleasantly surprised with the ability to extract flavors from my favorite roasts. The name comes from the extraction method, it uses a centrifugal system to extract the flavors from the beans from spinning them at speeds of 4500 revolutions per minute. I was surprised when I did the initial unboxing about the sheer footprint the machine occupies on your countertop, but then again, I was more surprised that they fit all that functionality into that same space. Honestly, I am not sure what I expected, but you get used to the size and once you experience what the system is capable of, you would be shocked that there isn’t an entire Starbucks in your kitchen.

Like all innovative products, you must assume that Spinn comes at a hefty price tag. Thankfully, I was able to pick this up in the initial kickstarter wave (although it took about 6 months to arrive) which came with a 60% discount, but now the system will run you a minimum of $799, with options topping out at $1299. Throughout the various trims of the system you can also get a Spinn coffee carafe sized perfectly to your drip tray, a detached milk frother, and the ability to hook it straight to a water system. My coffee sanctuary does not readily support attachment to a water system and I already had enough carafes to fuel a start-up office so I opted for the $799 system. Which comes with a $50 coffee credit to use in their Spinn market place to buy beans, replacement parts and cleaning solutions.
Which beautifully segues me into one of my favorite parts of the Spinn system. The Wifi compatibility of this system is top notch. I have found 0 delay in connecting to my system every morning, and I must say that the smart system is great for alerting you when the comparatively low volume water basin is empty, the grounds basin is full, or that you are running low on beans. On the app's interface you can name your machine, Mine is named Archer after everyone’s favorite super spy, you can reorder beans, replacement parts and start your morning brew. The versatility of the machine will allow you to choose between 17 different drinks ranging from black coffee, espresso shots, specialty brews (lungo, affogato shots, etc) and even hot water, and can be started from another room so you are greeted with a beautiful coffee aroma and a fresh cup upon approaching the machine. My personal morning routine is as follows, as I am getting dressed for work I start my first cup so I can drink it while I am enjoying breakfast, then as I am packing my lunch for the day I start a double brew carafe that I can put in my travel cup for work. In total this is about, ~32 oz which almost fully drains the water basin. As long as I remember to fill it before bed the night before, it is only a mild inconvenience. I recall a scenario when I was in college where I would hop into the shower after starting my Keurig in the morning only to find that there was not enough water leading to me having to skip my morning coffee, as gut wrenching as this feeling is, the Spinn will alert you right on the application that the water is low, so it is more proactive than other single cup brewing systems. It's as though the smart system understands that I cannot function without my morning coffee.
Initially I thought to myself that the in-app marketplace seemed a little gimmicky, but I must admit that I have found this in line with the theme of Spinn, convenience and a great cup of coffee. Not only am I able to connect with great small roasters like Toca and BCBC Coffee labs, but I can also quickly order replacement parts for the machine. If you find yourself needing to replace the integrated water filter, or if you're like me and as you are shaking out coffee grounds you overlook the fact that you have dumped the grounds basin lid into the trash can. You can easily pick up another one using your coffee credits, Apple pay, or Google pay. As an added bonus, each roaster had uploaded their ideal brew method for the given roast and the app will upload their mainframe of recipes to make sure that you are getting the most flavor out of your bean purchase, as well as the ability to store your favorite recipes and use them in tandem with the provided ones. As the concept is relatively new, there are only about 100 different roasts to choose from, for me, I could probably sample the entirety of their wares in a year's time, so I simply wish there were more options. I am in full support of Spinn’s commitment to supporting the local roasters, but I would love to see some more brands that started from humble beginnings that might presently be more established (Blue Bottle Coffee comes to mind).
In summation, I cannot emphasize how much I love this system, I would recommend it to everyone that values the importance of their morning coffee. If you can stomach the price tag (which still does not compare to some of the higher end systems you can buy), you gain access to their marketplace, extreme versatility, and a consistent no measure approach to a great cup of coffee. Not only can it do everything that a pod based system can do to a high degree, but it is also far less wasteful. It has become a permanent fixture on my countertop, only to be brushed aside for the occasional hands on method of a manual drip when time allows for it. I love the company’s initiative to support local roasters, I love the versatility of the system, and I love the consistently great cups of coffee it pours out in the morning. A must have if you are looking to enhance your morning coffee routine.
Finally, if you would like to earn free coffee, Spinn can help with that too, I have attached my referral code down below, so if you would like to buy coffee beans from their partners, you can use this code and get an additional $5.00 with your first purchase.
